'Police will only probe with Attorney-General's approval'

Book On KL Mayor Probe: Police waiting for A-G's approval
By ADIE SURI ZULKEFLLI
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3:
The police are waiting for the 'order-to-investigate' from the
Attorney-General's Chambers before probing a report lodged by the
author of
a controversial book which maligns the Kuala Lumpur mayor.
City police chief Datuk Mustafa Abdullah told The Malay Mail that as the
case was classified as a non-seizable offence (the subject cannot be
arrested), police needed to obtain the order before taking further
action.
He said police are planning to investigate the contents of Skandal
Seks dan
Rasuah Datuk Ruslin Hassan (Sex and Corruption Scandal of Datuk Ruslin
Hassan).
He said initial investigations by Dang Wangi police were carried out
under
Section 8A of the Printing Presses and Publishing Act 1984, since
there was
no police report calling for the scrutiny of the book's contents.
Mustafa said once police had obtained approval from the A-G's Chambers,
individuals linked to the allegations, including Datuk Ruslin Hassan,
would
have their statements recorded.
The Malay Mail reported yesterday that the author, Mohd Rafie Awang
Kecik,
lodged a report urging the police to investigate allegations in his
book.
Mohd Rafie, 41, also urged the Anti-Corruption Agency and the Public
Complaints Bureau to check the truth behind the allegations.
The author had also challenged Ruslin to dispute the allegations after
lodging his report at the Sentul police headquarters on Tuesday.
The saga of the controversial book began after a City Hall officer
lodged a
police report on Oct 20, two days after he was given a copy of the book.
Police detained two of Ruslin's senior officers on Oct 27, at their
office
in Jalan Raja Laut, a day after nabbing Mohd Rafie at his home in Taman
Melati, Gombak.
The author was remanded for four days before being released on police
bail.
The case is investigated under Section 8A of the Printing Presses and
Publishing Act 1984.
